SHOOT OUT REFINISHING AWARD 2024
This award challenges artists to showcase their photography skills by capturing their refinished furniture pieces in the most creative and impressive way. Submit photos that make the judges go “wow” and highlight your ability to present your work artistically and professionally.
Creative Approach: Provide a 150-250 word description explaining your approach to staging and photographing your refinished piece. Discuss the creative techniques you used to make your photos stand out.
Visual Presentation: Submit up to 5 high-quality images of your refinished work, highlighting your photography skills. Each image should be at least 500×500 pixels. Remember, the bigger the image, the better the quality of the prints at the event. Our judges will be viewing the images on our website, so higher resolution images will look much better and showcase your work more effectively. Use creative staging, lighting, and angles to enhance the visual impact and make your photos captivating.

Creative Efficiency: For this avant-garde project, I transformed an old dresser into a vibrant, disco-themed statement piece. I began by cleaning and sanding the dresser to prepare it for its new look. I applied a glossy black base coat to create a sleek, modern foundation. Once dry, I used metallic silver paint to add bold, reflective patterns reminiscent of disco balls, incorporating circular stencils and freehand designs for a dynamic effect. Neon paints in pink, blue, and green were used to create abstract splashes and lines, capturing the energetic vibe of a 1970s disco.
Visual Presentation: To capture the piece, I used professional photography lighting to create a dramatic and vibrant effect. I set up a black backdrop to contrast with the neon and metallic colours, and used coloured gels on my lights to mimic the atmosphere of a disco. The lights were positioned to highlight the reflective surfaces and neon details, creating dynamic shadows and highlights that make the piece pop. The high-resolution photos were taken from multiple angles to showcase the intricate designs and the overall aesthetic of the dresser.
