TECHNICAL REFINISHING AWARD 2024
This award recognises the artist who best demonstrates exceptional technical skills in furniture refinishing. Your submission should showcase your precision, craftsmanship, and understanding of advanced techniques in the refinishing process.
Your submission should demonstrate:
- Technical Knowledge: Provide a 150, or more, word description explaining your technical approach and application. Ensure clarity on how and why you used specific techniques.
- Visual Evidence: Submit up to 5 high-quality images that clearly show your technical skills. Each image should be at least 500×500 pixels. Remember, the bigger the image, the better the quality of the prints at the event. Our judges will be viewing the images on our website, so higher resolution images will look much better and showcase your work more effectively.
- Practical Application: Showcase an excellent finished piece, demonstrating mastery of your craft.

Technical Knowledge: I employed meticulous steps to refinish an old chair. Initially, I cleaned and sanded the chair to ensure a smooth surface. Next, I applied a primer followed by several thin coats of paint, utilising blending and layering techniques to achieve a beautiful finish. To enhance the aesthetic, I added intricate hand-painted details and sealed the project with a protective topcoat.
Visual Evidence: The submitted photos highlight the chair’s smooth, even finish and the intricate hand-painted accents. The images clearly showcase the careful blending of colours and the overall high-quality workmanship.
Practical Application: The completed chair not only looks stunning but is also highly durable. This project demonstrates my proficiency in refinishing furniture with minimal errors, showcasing both my technical skills and attention to detail.
